Weather Closings May Occur
Klein ISD campuses are occasionally closed due to bad weather such as flooding, snow and ice. The following information should help parents understand what procedures Klein ISD uses to close the school district.
Making the Decision to Close Schools
When bad weather is predicted, the district has personnel designated to drive sectors of the district during the early morning hours to determine if the major roads are passable. The superintendent also coordinates with other neighboring districts regarding the decision to close schools due to inclement weather. Factors for consideration in closing schools include flooding throughout the district, major roads impassable due to high water, patches of ice on major roadways and bridges across the district, weather predictions for later in the day, etc.
With 88 square miles of land in the Klein ISD, it is possible that some areas may experience minor flooding or icy patches for a short period of time but the majority of the district is not experiencing any flooding or ice on the roads.
Notification Process for Closings and Delays
Under most circumstances, a decision to close school due to bad weather is made by 5:30 a.m. If enough information is available, school district officials may make a decision the night before and parents will be notified before 10 p.m.
If school is closed, the announcement will first be posted on the Klein ISD website. Information will also be posted on the Klein ISD Facebook page and Twitter account. Finally, parents will be notified by automated phone calls through the ParentLink notification system. It is important that parents keep their contact phone number current in Parent Connection if they want to receive Parentlink notifications.
The information will be sent to local television and radio stations as well. Because of the large number of school districts in the area, the television and radio announcements are sometimes delayed 30 to 45 minutes.
Other Pertinent Information
Parents are encouraged not to call the school offices since no employees are answering the phones late at night or early in the morning.
The Klein ISD website, Facebook and Twitter are the quickest sources of information for a school closing. If school is not closed for the day, no announcements will be made and students should report at the normal time. The school district does not send out a Parentlink notification that school is in session although it may be posted as a reminder on Facebook and sent out on Twitter.
