STEAM Express Receives Grant
Aug 02 2017 - 09:41:00 am

The Klein ISD STEAM Express is one of the newest recipients of an $11,500 grant from Bosch Community Fund grant program.  The grant program supports STEM education and environmental sustainability by providing students an experience to approach science and technology, and inspire them to think differently about energy.

“Although this grant is guided towards alternative energy and resources, people in Texas so go big, and we did,” said Klein ISD STEAM Express instructor, Bill Nebeker. “We were awarded the grant. And now we are in a whirlwind of what’s possible!”

The first part of this project will allow the STEAM Express to purchase a new laser cutter/engraver for students to receive a hands-on learning experience by cutting items in a safe environment and create new products from used items. By creating new items from old ones, it brings the recycling and reusing concepts to life for the visitors of the STEAM Express.

The second part of this project will provide learning activities that will give students great experiences varying from magnetic levitating cars, to solar cookers, to H2O powered vehicles. This portion will also work in conjunction with the laser cutter to create new ideas that students will bring to life.

“We always strive to ignite and inspire all students who visit us at all grade levels,” said Nebeker. “Companies and businesses that provide grants and donations to the STEAM Express are making a difference beyond what happens today. It allows us to focus on our lifelong learners and students who have “grown up” on the STEAM Express.”

The Klein ISD STEAM Express visits more than 23,000 students and about 6,000 community members each year.
