The assessment program for Klein ISD includes the following:

Naglieri Nonverbal Ability Tests (NNAT) and Stanford Early School Achievement Tests (SAT10) for Kindergarten. Both tests are part of the screening process to identify Kindergarten students for the Gifted & Talented Program. Spanish speaking Kindergarten students take Aprenda instead of the Stanford. Information regarding the Naglieri, Aprenda, and the Stanford may be found at: http://harcourtassessment.com/haiweb/Cultures/en-US/default.htm

Grade 2 students take the Stanford Achievement 10th edition (SAT10). This test measures student skills in Reading, Mathematics, Language, Spelling, and Environment. Additional information on the SAT10 is found on the Harcourt website. See the link above in the Kindergarten section.

Students in grade 10 and 11 take the PSAT in October. The PSAT is a predictor of a student's score on the SAT. Students may use the results of the PSAT to identify strengths and weaknesses in preparation for a higher score in the SAT. (A student should take the SAT in the spring of his/her Junior year or the fall of the Senior year.)
The PSAT score is also used to identify students who may perform well on Advanced Placement tests taken after enrolling and participating in an Advanced Placement course taken during a student's senior year. A student's score on the PSAT during the Junior year may also qualify him/her for the National Merit Scholarship program.
More information about the PSAT may be found at :http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/psat/about.html Students in grades 3-11 must take state assessments provided by the Texas Education Agency. These tests are known as the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills or TAKS. The chart below shows the subjects tested at each grade level.

** Students in grades 5 and 8 must pass TAKS Reading and Math to be promoted to the next grade level.
***Students must pass all four tests (English Language Arts, Math, Science, and Social Studies) before a high school diploma is awarded.
Students in grades 11 or 12 may receive online tutorials preparing for the EXIT TAKS. The website address is http://www.track.uttelecampus.org/started.aspx

The TAKS is based upon the Texas state curriculum, the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). For more information go to: http://www.tea.state.tx.us/teks/index.html and http://www.tea.state.tx.us/student.assessment/taks/booklets/index.html

For copies of previous TAKS tests go to: http://www.tea.state.tx.us/student.assessment/resources/release/taks/index.html

Students whose primary home language is not English must take the TELPAS Reading test. This test measures an English Language Learner's growth from one year to the next in the acquisition of English reading skills. Additional information may be found at: http://www.tea.state.tx.us/student.assessment/resources/guides/educator/index.html

Klein ISD students in Grades 6-12 may earn Credit by Examination (CBE) for secondary school courses in which they have had no prior instruction. Each CBE tests one semester of a course. If the student scores 90 or above, credit is awarded for that semester. Students should see their school counselor for a CBE testing schedule and to register for a test.

Students in Grades 1-5 may skip a grade level by taking Elementary Credit by Exam (CBE) in Reading, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies for the grade level he/she wishes to skip and by scoring 90 or above on each. Parents should visit the school principal for more information on this process. Kindergarten students who meet the state enrollment requirements may skip Kindergarten by scoring in the 90th percentile on each subtest of a norm-referenced Kindergarten achievement test. Parents should visit the school principal for more information on this process.

Students are encouraged to take either the ACT or the SAT (or both) during the spring of their Junior year or the fall of their Senior year. These tests, given on selected Saturdays, have a registration deadline and a fee.

Registration information regarding the ACT may be found at: http://www.act.org/

For registration information about the SAT go to: http://www.collegeboard.com/splash  may access a free online SAT-ACT test preparation program by using the link http://www.collegefortexans.com/
