350 Parents Celebrated at 10th Annual Klein ISD Parent University Graduation
The Klein ISD Family Engagement team hosted the 10th Annual Parent University Graduation at Champion Forest Baptist Church, where 350 parents and family members were recognized for their steadfast dedication to self-improvement and involvement in the lives of their children.
The Klein ISD Parent University Graduation signifies the culmination of a year-long effort of purposeful collaboration between campus staff and families aimed at fostering partnerships that strengthen student success. Throughout the academic year, tailored sessions are designed to cater to family interests and to empower them with the tools necessary to sustain support for our students.
“When I first arrived at the school, I had no idea how the school system worked, but my son's teacher invited me to sign up as a volunteer,” Parent Univesity Graduate Ms. Maria Villafaña said. “I knew I wanted to help my son but didn't know how to do it, and while volunteering, I learned about the opportunities available to help me as a parent learn how to support him academically. Over the years I have made a promise, and that is to be a committed parent. I have learned that making our children successful takes time, effort, and teamwork with teachers and school staff.”
The Klein ISD Parent University initiative was first established by former Campus Principal Dr. Bob Anderson at Klein Intermediate. Dr. Anderson had the vision of bringing families, staff, and community to intentionally collaborate on behalf of students. Today, 19 Klein ISD campuses from across the district embrace this practice as part of their efforts to build a community that supports our learners.
“Over the last decade, over 1,000 parents and family members have participated in numerous sessions meticulously crafted by our campuses, covering various topics such as life skills, academic assistance, and health.,” Klein ISD Family Engagement Director Maria Ovalle-Lopez said. “Our families have also enjoyed the benefits of fruitful collaborations with community partners, enhancing their daily lives and fostering a holistic sense of well-being within our community. We eagerly anticipate this celebration as an opportunity to reaffirm our dedication to every student and every family within our Klein ISD community!”
Our Klein ISD Family School Liaisons are dedicated staff members who collaborate with school counselors, teachers, and administrators to ensure our families have the resources and support they need to be immersed in their children’s educational journey. Their work is part of what has made Klein ISD a TEA model district for Family Engagement.
“We are immensely grateful for the dedication of our families in the Parent University program and the incredible commitment of our family liaisons and staff who make it possible,” Klein ISD Superintendent Dr. Jenny McGown said. “Their combined efforts reflect the excellence and heart of our families and educators in Klein ISD.”
Completing the Parent University Program is a testament to each graduate’s commitment to their child’s educational experience and is hard-earned. Congratulations, grads!
