BASE+ Leadership Academy Initiative Empowers Students with Special Needs

BASE+ Leadership Academy Initiative Empowers Students with Special Needs

The first-ever BASE+ Leadership Academy initiative, run by Klein ISD Police Officer Gregg Lewis in partnership with Kohrville Elementary teacher Ms. Jennifer Bunge, focuses on helping students with special needs develop leadership skills.

Now in its second year, the program meets bi-weekly and teaches topics like friendship, leadership, and success through one-on-one engagement.

The Behavior, Academic, Social, and Emotional (“BASE+”) program is designed to meet the individualized needs of students who require intensive emotional and behavioral interventions and support as part of an Individualized Education Program (IEP), as determined by the Admission, Review, Dismissal (ARD) committee.

"My goal is to help kids improve their communication skills and gain the confidence to interact with their peers and family members," Officer Lewis said. "I want them to have the ability to have meaningful conversations and make positive choices."

The BASE+ Leadership program focuses on individualized support, helping students develop character and strengthen social skills. Officer Lewis has seen remarkable progress, including students who were once non-verbal and are now engaging in conversations.

Korhrville Elementary Principal Kia Bowie is happy to see the program's positive effect on her students.

"Seeing the BASE+ Leadership Academy succeed is nothing short of inspiring. The greatest reward is watching our students grow, take on challenges, and develop into confident, capable leaders,” Principal Bowie said. “This program isn't just about leadership skills—it's about opening doors, building resilience, and empowering young people to believe in their potential. Every successful year reminds me of the transformative impact that guidance, mentorship, and support can make in shaping the future."

Parents have expressed gratitude, noting noticeable changes in their children. For them, it's rewarding to see their students who were once withdrawn become more open and confident.

Officer Lewis and Ms. Bunge are inspired by the success of the BASE+ Leadership Academy Program at Kohrville and hope to see it grow in other schools within Klein ISD.

"I believe this program positively impacts my students, as it helps them build a trusting relationship with another adult in a leadership role,” Kohrville BASE+ Teacher Jennifer Bunge said.  “Along with the social skills we incorporate daily in class, this connection provides an added benefit that supports their growth and development."

Thank you, Officer Lewis and Ms. Bunge, for the time and care you instill in our students' lives to ensure their success, inside and outside the classroom.
