Butch Theiss, a 1947 Klein High School graduate and cherished figure in the Klein community, was recently recognized for his profound and lasting influence following his recent passing.

During this tribute to Mr. Theiss, his family gathered on the very field bearing his name—Butch Theiss Field—during halftime. The Theiss family was presented with a U.S. flag in recognition of his proud service as a U.S. Army veteran, along with signed footballs from both the Klein High and Klein Cain football teams, and a Klein High football jersey with his high school number, 12, from the Klein ISD Board of Trustees.

“My mom always says that people never really die so long as we remember them, and in remembering Butch today, we honor a legend who lived a life of service and simply made the world and any place he ever went so much better,” Superintendent Dr. McGown said. “What an amazing gift and example he was and always will be to me and all of us in our Klein Family.”

Affectionately known as “The Original Mr. Bearkat,” Mr. Theiss returned to his beloved high school after graduating in 1947 and served as a player and coach for the first-ever Klein High football team. This was the start of a lifelong dedication to our Klein ISD community.

Mr. Theiss was committed to improving his community and proudly served our country as a sergeant and tank driver in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict in 1966.

When Mr. Theiss returned to Klein, Texas following his service, he laid down roots with his family and proudly lived here until the age of 95 before his passing. During his many years in the Klein community, Mr. Theiss served as a Klein ISD Board Trustee, employee, mentor, and dedicated volunteer.

His servant’s heart and love for our Klein community led to Klein Memorial Stadium’s football field being named in his honor in 2010.

Mr. Theiss’ passion for our Klein community also extended to our students through his unwavering support of Klein ISD FFA. He attended auctions, opened his land for students to raise animals, and generously supported awards, fundraisers, and annual events.

Mr. Theiss also made significant contributions to the Wunderlich Farm and Interactive History Park, where the home he was born in now stands as a major exhibit.

Our Klein Family is thankful for Mr. Butch Theiss and his lifelong commitment and impact on our Klein ISD community.

The Original Mr. Bearkat was truly the heart of Klein, Texas, and we will continue to honor his legacy by providing our students with the opportunities and education that Mr. Theiss valued so much here in Klein ISD.
