Doerre Intermediate Awarded $6,200 from KEF for ‘The Language Lounge’ Grant
Doerre Intermediate received a Klein ISD Education Foundation (KEF) grant to unite students through literature with The Language Lounge.
In a surprise visit orchestrated by the KEF Celebration Express, the school was honored with the grant in the presence of Foundation directors, community members, and our esteemed Superintendent, Dr. Jenny McGown.
Amidst an atmosphere of joy and excitement, the Doerre Intermediate staff welcomed numerous Foundation supporters disembarking from the Celebration Express school bus. They presented substantial grants to the recipients, including Doerre Intermediate.
The intermediate school will use the $6,200 grant sponsored by Salas O’Brien to provide books in both English and Spanish, as well as a relaxing space for students to read with their families.
As part of the program, a Language Lounge book club will be established, bringing students together by pairing a book in English with the same book in Spanish to spark thoughtful and meaningful conversations. The program will also partner with Languages Other Than English (LOTE) to increase Spanish comprehension and assist with challenges that arise with vocabulary lost in translation.
“We are honored to be able to present this grant to Doerre,” KEF Director Christy Spisak said. “This grant is outstanding, and we are excited that students are given the opportunity to expand their language and literacy skills in a relaxing environment.”
This fall, the KEF Celebration Express distributed grants totaling $79,134, enriching educational experiences for our learners. These grants encompass various innovative and engaging projects, from initiatives focused on Math fluency to those enhancing literacy. The Fall 2023 grant recipients are not only innovative but also serve as a source of inspiration.
We extend heartfelt gratitude to all our grant sponsors whose contributions have made these initiatives possible. Your support plays a pivotal role in enhancing the educational journey of every Klein ISD student.
The Klein ISD Education Foundation accepts grant applications biannually, encouraging, facilitating, and acknowledging creative projects that drive academic success for our Klein ISD students.
