KLEIN, TX — Klein ISD is proud to announce that Klein Cain High School senior Katharine Falzarano has been named one of the top 300 scholars in the Regeneron Science Talent Search (STS), the nation’s oldest and most prestigious science and math competition for high school seniors.

Of the 300 students honored globally, Katharine is among just 13 from Texas and the only representative from the Greater Houston area.

Katharine’s innovative project, “A Comprehensive Investigation Into Predicting Protein Expression Levels From scRNA-seq Data Using Deep Learning,” was selected from nearly 2,500 entries across the United States and abroad.

As a Regeneron STS scholar, Katharine will receive a $2,000 award, and Klein Cain High School will also receive a matching $2,000 to support STEM-related initiatives. This remarkable achievement follows Katharine’s recognition with the President’s Volunteer Service Award (Gold Level) in 2024 for her dedicated community service.

“Getting the opportunity to perform rigorous scientific work at such a great university was a dream come true,” Katharine shared. “I cried tears of joy when I got the award letter. It felt amazing to have my work recognized at this level, and I’m so grateful for this experience.”

Beyond her current success, Katharine intends to study neuroscience in college and pursue a career as a pediatric neurologist.

“I love working with kids and am passionate about science and medicine,” she said. “I want to dedicate my life to helping children with neurological disorders.”

Katharine, who also participates in varsity tennis, chamber orchestra, and Best Buddies, is now in consideration to be one of 40 Regeneron STS Finalists. Finalists will compete in a week-long competition in Washington, D.C., March 6-12, 2025, for more than $1.8 million in awards.
