Klein ISD Students Go On Shopping Spree Thanks to District Police Department
Joyful students from across the Klein ISD flooded into their local Academy Sports + Outdoors store this holiday season with huge smiles as they roamed the aisles, looking for the perfect items to fill their baskets.
The Klein ISD Police Department helped brighten the holidays for 50 students at their 7th annual Holiday Heroes event.
“The Holiday Heroes program is one of the proudest traditions we’ve established as a police department. It seems like the enthusiasm and appreciation grows stronger every year,” Klein ISD Police Chief Marlon Runnels said. “It is truly one of the biggest highlights of the entire school year for us.”
The Holiday Heroes festivities kicked off with a lot of fun and food as GPI Defense hosted the students and officers before going shopping. Students sang karaoke and had dance battles with their officers while enjoying a meal provided by Chick-fil-A Gleannloch Village. This year, they got the whole winter experience with “snow” covering the ground and a surprise visit from the Grinch!
“This is the first year that I am taking the lead in Holiday Heroes. I am so excited to take the initiative on this event and see the excitement on their faces,” Officer Ileana Perez said. “This is a very fun interaction for the officers and the students. This is why we plan the entire night: to see them smile and be happy. We do this for them!”
Once their bellies were full and their smiles couldn’t seem to get any bigger or brighter, it was time to go shopping. Students and their officer sponsor headed to the Academy Sports + Outdoors West Spring location with $150 in hand and took the store by storm.
“I’m grateful to have been selected for this because it gives me a chance to see what it’s like for people to give back to you. I thank Lieutenant Jones for this because she’s always been there for me,” Klein Forest Junior Justin said. “Anytime I have any problems, she’s there. She’s always been there with open arms, and I love her for that.”
Throughout the last seven years, the Klein ISD Police Department has blessed 400 students through Holiday Heroes. They’ve raised approximately $75,000 in donations since the start of the tradition and look forward to continuing to spread holiday cheer in the years to come.
“Through the generous donations from our community partners and our officers, our kids will have about $10,000 worth of Christmas joy tonight,” Chief Runnels said. “$10,000 is a whole lot of coin, but the Heroes program is not about the gifts they receive; it demonstrates the collective spirit of giving within our Klein Family. It underscores the importance of collaboration and how, by working together, we can make a meaningful difference in the lives of those who need it most.”
This magical night was made possible because of our selfless officers and a lot of help from our community partners: Chick-fil-A, Academy Sports, SNLL Law Firm, and Troy Skeen with GPI Defense.
“One thing we truly love is kids. We believe so much in kids; they are our future.” Owner of GPI Defense, Troy Skeen, said. “We want to ensure these kids have the best Christmas possible. It has been a great partnership with the Klein ISD Police Department; these guys are amazing.”
We are so grateful for our outstanding Klein ISD Police Department, who made this a night for our wonderful students to remember. Thank you for all that you do!
