KLEIN, TEXAS – Bernshausen Elementary has been awarded a $983 Educator Grant from the Klein ISD Education Foundation (KEF) for the “Book Beads” project, a creative reading initiative that turns students’ literacy achievements into meaningful, tangible memories they can proudly wear.
In a surprise visit from the KEF Celebration Express, Bernshausen was honored with the grant alongside Foundation directors, community members, and Superintendent Dr. Jenny McGown.
Led by grant writer Kim Richards and sponsored by Perdue Brandon Fielder Collins & Mott, LLP, the Book Beads project encourages students to read more by allowing them to add a bead to a necklace for every book they complete. Over time, each necklace becomes a colorful “portfolio” of stories read, symbolizing not just academic progress but cherished memories that students can hold in their hands and in their hearts.
In its first semester of implementation, the project will primarily benefit 5th-grade dual-language students, supporting TELPAS reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills, as well as STAAR reading skills. As the program grows, eager readers—such as members of the Name That Book Club—will also be able to participate, expanding its impact across more students and grade levels.
Most of the reading will take place at home and during independent reading time in class, giving students ownership of their learning. On designated days each week, students can select their beads during breakfast or dismissal, choosing colors and styles that reflect their personality and reading journey. This ritual not only celebrates progress but also builds excitement and motivation to keep reading.
By transforming reading achievements into personalized rewards, Book Beads reaches diverse learners in ways traditional methods often cannot. The project encourages students to read and analyze more books across different genres, fostering critical thinking, creativity, communication skills, and a strong sense of community pride. Its low-cost, scalable design means it can be easily replicated across schools and communities, multiplying its positive impact.
“This grant brings reading to life for students at Bernshausen Elementary, turning each book they read into a colorful, meaningful achievement,” Klein ISD Education Foundation Director Christy Spisak said. “We’re thrilled the Foundation can support creative projects like this that inspire students, build confidence, and make learning both tangible and joyful.”
Funding the Book Beads project is an investment in an innovative approach that empowers students to grow academically and personally through joyful literacy experiences, reinforcing Klein ISD’s commitment to nurturing lifelong readers and learners.
This fall, the KEF Celebration Express distributed grants totaling $62,057, enriching educational experiences for our learners.
