name that book

Elementary and intermediate students battled it out this month for a shot at being the “Name That Book” 2026 District Champions. This district-wide competition celebrates our students' love of reading and encourages them to practice their discipline, reading, and leadership skills.

In the end, it was our Frank Flyers and Hofius Hawks who came out on top after a fully booked day of fun and friendly competition!

Right on the Hawks’ trail was our second-place team from Doerre, and following closely was our third-place team from Kleb. Shoutout to our second-place elementary team from Mittelstadt and the third-place team from Hassler.

"I'm glad I joined Name That Book because I've made new friends and it helped me win the District Spelling Bee,” Hofius team member Brielle Selinger said. “One of the words I spelled correctly came from one of our Name That Book books, and that's the reason I knew the word."

Brielle’s experience is one way that this competition encourages students to expand their reading and apply what they learn in meaningful ways.

“The Name That Book competition is a wonderful reminder of what happens when students fall in love with reading and are challenged to read widely and think deeply,” Program Coordinator of Libraries Meredith Derrick said. “Their dedication and enthusiasm are inspiring, and it’s made possible by the librarians who champion literacy and create spaces where readers thrive.”

Here’s how the competition works. (We hope you have the spine for it!)

Over the year, our bookworms read 25 books of various genres from cover to cover. They sit in a team huddle at the competition and listen closely as a quote is read. Then, they work collaboratively for 30 allotted seconds in order to "NAME THAT BOOK." Once the timer beeps, the team captain holds up their team’s chosen book title that they believe the quote came from.

We would like to extend a special thanks to our families for supporting our students’ love of reading and our librarians, teachers, and administrators for serving as trusted coaches throughout this process.

This event also celebrates the legacy of the dedicated and innovative librarians who founded Klein ISD's Name That Book Program in 2013 at Eiland Elementary, Epps Island Elementary, and Nitsch Elementary. The program was expanded to intermediate campuses in 2019.

Congratulations to our district champs—thanks for another great year of Name That Book! We are all so proud of your commitment and excellence.
