Future educators now have a new path into the classroom.
Klein ISD joined the University of Houston-Downtown and Lone Star College-University Park for a ribbon-cutting and signing ceremony launching the Lions and Gators Future Teacher Alliance, a partnership designed to move more students from high school into the teaching profession.
The event, held at the University of Houston-Downtown, also recognized the first scholarship recipients from the Charles Butt Foundation and Houston Endowment Teachers Pathways Program.
A Shared Commitment to Future Educators
The Lions and Gators Future Teacher Alliance is designed to connect students to a clear path from high school to college and into teacher certification. Through the partnership, students can begin preparing for careers in education earlier, continue their studies through aligned college coursework, and move forward with support from each institution along the way.
“This alliance is about giving students a clear direction and the support to follow it all the way through. When students can see the path ahead and know they are not navigating it alone, they move forward with confidence. That is what this partnership creates, and it is how we begin to meet the growing need for educators in our communities,” said Matthew Dempsey, Ed.D., president of Lone Star College-University Park.
The work also reflects a broader goal shared by UHD, LSC-University Park, and Klein ISD: building a stronger pipeline of future teachers who are prepared to serve their communities and meet workforce needs close to home.
“We know the future of education depends on the people we invite, encourage, and prepare to lead it,” said Klein ISD Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jenny McGown. “This partnership with the University of Houston-Downtown and Lone Star College-University Park creates a meaningful path for future educators to follow their purpose and step confidently into the profession. We are proud to be part of a partnership that supports students, expands access, and helps Klein ISD grow the next generation of teachers.”
“This event reflects the power of intentional partnership and a shared vision. Bringing together leadership from each partner institution, along with the university divisions that support student success and especially our inaugural scholarship recipients who will be attending UHD this fall, serves as a powerful reminder of why this work matters,” said Dr. Tonya Jeffery, PI & Faculty Lead - DAIR to Teach Program, and Assistant Professor of Science Education at UHD. “Through the Lions and Gators Future Teacher Alliance, we are not only creating pathways into the profession, but we are also building a strong, sustainable pipeline of educators who are prepared to serve and lead in our communities. I am incredibly proud of what we’ve launched together and excited about the impact ahead.”
Celebrating a Milestone
In addition to the signing and ribbon cutting, the event highlighted the importance of partnership across K-12 and higher education. Leaders from UHD, LSC-University Park, and Klein ISD came together around a shared vision for removing barriers, expanding access, and helping more students pursue careers in education.
As the partnership moves forward, the Lions and Gators Future Teacher Alliance will help open more doors for aspiring educators while strengthening Klein ISD’s long-term effort to grow its own future teacher workforce.
The first cohort of scholarship recipients is set to begin at UHD this fall.
