Klein ISD is celebrating an extraordinary achievement: the Klein Intermediate 6th Grade Academic Pentathlon Team earned 1st place in the Invite Division at the United States Academic Pentathlon National Competition in Nashville, Tennessee.
“Achievements like this reflect the incredible commitment our students, staff, and families bring to Klein ISD every day,” Klein ISD Superintendent Dr. Jenny McGown said. “Our Klein Intermediate students demonstrated exceptional academic excellence, perseverance, and teamwork throughout their Pentathlon journey, and we are so proud of the way they represented Klein ISD on the national stage. Their success is a testament to the outstanding support from their coaches, families, and our Klein Intermediate community.”
The Invite Division included top-performing teams from across the region, state, and nation that qualified through highly competitive regional and state-level competitions. The national event brings together some of the highest-achieving Pentathlon students in the country for several days of academic competition, collaboration, and celebration.
Throughout the 2025–2026 season, Klein Intermediate students dedicated countless hours to preparing for competition through rigorous academic study, team collaboration, and practices before and after school. Students competed in literature, mathematics, science, fine arts, and social science, while also developing leadership, perseverance, and teamwork skills.
This year’s Pentathlon curriculum focused on:
Literature: Critical reading, selected shorter works, and the novel Born to Fly
Science: Introduction to electricity and magnetism
Social Science: Exploration of the Roaring Twenties
Fine Arts: The art and music of the Jazz Age
Mathematics: An overview of Algebra and Trigonometry
The team first earned 1st place at the district competition, then advanced to regionals, where they placed 2nd overall and earned an invitation to compete at Nationals.
At the national competition, the team continued to excel, ultimately earning a gold medal and a National Championship title in the Invite Division.
“We are so incredibly proud of the extraordinary year-long dedication, effort, and hard work from the Klein Intermediate 6th Grade Pentathlon National Championship Team,” Klein ISD Director of Advanced Academics Kathleen Plott said. “Outstanding coaches Yujin Seo and Sierra Gonzalez provided exceptional support and mentorship that resulted in this unforgettable experience for every Klein Intermediate student competitor.”
The program's success reflects years of continued growth and investment from students, staff, and the Klein Intermediate community.
“Over the past three years, since the revival of KI’s Pentathlon program, the growth has been incredible,” Ms. Yujin Seo said. “We’ve seen an overwhelming increase in student interest and a genuine sense of pride and investment from our KI community. It truly has taken a village to build the program into what it is today, and I’m so excited to see what it will grow into.”
Coach Sierra Gonzalez praised students for their determination throughout the season.
“I truly could not be more proud of my students,” Ms. Gonzalez said. “They poured their hearts into making this dream a reality through their hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Watching them grow throughout this journey has been such an honor, and I have the utmost respect and admiration for all they have accomplished.
For the students, the journey to gold was filled with challenges, setbacks, and unforgettable moments that made the victory even more meaningful.
"The race for gold was definitely an emotional experience. There were tough tests, moments of disappointment, and times when we weren't sure we would make it,” student Isabella Motealvo said. “But even when things got hard, I still had hope and believed our team could do it. There were many challenges along the way, but all our hard work paid off. When it was over, I felt so relieved and proud. We won the gold medal, and best of all, we brought home the trophy as a team."
Klein ISD congratulates the Klein Intermediate Academic Pentathlon team, coaches, staff, and families on this outstanding national accomplishment and for representing the district with excellence on the national stage.
